Getting Your Vegetable Garden Ready for Spring

Whether you suffer through harsh, cold winters or enjoy relatively mild ones, we are coming up on the time when you need to get ready to plant your seeds for your vegetable garden.

If you need another compost bin this time of year is great to add them, if only because there's not much actual gardening work to do. Build one or buy one, just make sure you can easily add, remove and turn the material.

Clean up your tools. Sharpen blades if they need it. Clean off old dirt and wipe with an oiled cloth to help prevent rusting.

At this time you can also start planning your next garden. You can figure out what you want to grow and how you're going to lay that garden out. Planning ahead can help you make the most of your garden. Getting things started at the right time for each type of plant will help your garden succeed.

If you want an early start, get some planters and sun lamps and start your seeds indoors. If you get sufficient sunlight, placing the boxes in windows can help you get that early start too.

This is a great time for looking back at how your garden did last year and your goals for this year. For example, my garden last year failed miserably due to a combination of poor soil, a neighboring shade tree that had been shading my garden being cut to pieces and an unusually hot summer.

Over the winter we've been preparing quick compost for the soil. This is just throwing fresh kitchen scraps into the blender with some water, then pouring it into the garden. It's our first step in improving the soil naturally. More will be done as planting time approaches.

Obviously, factors that are out of your control you can't do anything about. Heat waves cannot be avoided and neighbors can be unpredictable (you should have seen that poor tree when they were done "pruning" it!). Some years insects are more problematic than others.

In those cases you need to have plans for how to handle it. Keep an eye on what the sun is doing to your plants during a heat wave and ensure they have enough water. Know what pest control steps you are willing to take.

Planning and preparing to plant your garden before you can actually start planting gives you a lot of advantages when it's time to really work your garden. It gets some of the chores out of the way and leaves you prepared for a great start to your vegetable garden.

    Tips For Indoor Gardening

During those long winter months one can bring a little bit of the outdoors in with with some indoor gardening. Having plants in the home can really add to your decor and helps off than the look of every room as well as add to your health. Indoor plants can help add moisture to the air as well as help filter the air by exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen.

Indoor gardening is no more demanding than outdoor gardening and you don't have to have a lot of plants to make a big difference in your home. Just like outdoor plants those that you keep indoors need some basic things such as lighting water and nutrients.

Different types of indoor plants require different amounts of lighting but most plants will grow better with good light. You can help provide this by placing plants near windows where they can get natural light but you may also want to buy a special plant grow light especially for those dark winter days. When choosing plants for your indoor garden, keep in mind that the darker leafed plants usually don't need as much light as the other plants.

Many people tend to kill their indoor plants by overwatering them. While your indoor garden needs water just like your outdoor garden it's important to remember that these plants are in containers and you can't just load them up with a ton of water that will stand in the container and perhaps wrought the roots. Be sure that each container has a good drainage system, perhaps with rocks at the very bottom of the container, and a saucer for the water to drain out into. You should not let the soil get to dry but don't overwater either. Check your in your garden at least once a week to to see if it needs watering.

With indoor gardening, humidity can be a problem particularly in the winter when it is very dry. To keep your plants moisturized you can spray them with a fine mist and if it is really dry dry wrapping the plant in a cone of newspaper or wax paper and missing the play and then. The cold will help keep the moisture into the plant.

Different plants require different kinds and amounts of fertilization. You should be aware of each planning your indoor garden and what its needs are. You can buy indoor fertilizer from any home goods or garden store and you can even buy fertilizer sticks that you stick in the container at the grocery store. Some exotic plants like orchids need special fertilizer of most regular houseplants just use the regular fertilizer you can find in any store.

Here's a few plants you might want to add to your indoor garden:

    African violets

These plants have pretty purple flowers and green glossy leaves. They are quite often grown indoors and can add colorful splash to your indoor garden. They like light but don't put them right in the final get scorched. Avoid overwatering as this will kill them.

    Philodendrons

These of the most popular and Hardy of all indoor garden plants. They are full of large green leaves and prefer a medium light. It's best to let them dry out a bit between wanderings and you can keep the little dryer in the winter. If the leaves turn brown and you're not watering them enough. They like high humidity but will do okay in most homes. Be sure to wash the leaves off often to remove dust.

    Boston Ferns

The Boston fern is a popular indoor plant which produces a thick bundle of leaves. It requires diffused lighting and will need a grow light in rooms where there is not enough natural light. They can be sensitive to chlorine and tap water so watering regularly with distilled water is best. Boston ferns can be a bit difficult to grow as they like cool locations with a lot of humidity. Misting your Boston fern each day can help it be happy and healthy.

    Jade Plant

They Jade Plant is a succulent and can tolerate very dry conditions. These plants are extremely tolerant and difficult to kill so few one start in indoor garden but don't have a green calm you do well to consider one of these.

Make the Most Of Your Garden

Today many people regard their greenspaces as an extra room. They view them as a room which requires designing and styling, like any other. And like any other room, the garden can provide the ambient background that you desire, whether tranquil and serene, or bright and stimulating.

Whether we are talking about a window box on a balcony twenty floors up, or a tiny backyard terrace, these spaces can all be stylishly greened-up and themed with distinctive garden accessories and accents to offer you an oasis of tranquility in an otherwise hectic world.

There are many types of garden decor and design. You may choose to have a peaceful and tranquil water garden. Water fountains are fabulous accents for your home as well as your gardens and greenspaces. And these days, they come in all sizes, to fit all spaces and all pockets. There are many which would even fit the tiniest balcony or terrace. They don???t need intricate plumbing or installing, so don???t let that put you off.

There are so many stylish designs available, you are sure to find one which suits your overall look. Whether it is an Egyptian Pharaoh fountain, with its background of gently lapping water, or a granite pagoda fountain softly trickling. A fountain can really help you achieve a sense of calm and tranquility.

There are many home and garden stores or home and garden shops. It seems that they are springing up everywhere to meet the demand for all our d??cor needs. The internet can offer a good selection of websites. The better web based home and garden decor stores offer high quality products, with many handmade and finely crafted objects. Sometimes you will find original pieces at very reasonable rates. It is these pieces which will form the heirlooms of tomorrow.

When styling your greenspace, and outside areas, do not neglect to place some magical wind chimes, wind bells or wind circles in strategic positions, to delight the sense of sound. The soothing tinkling of these chimes is the perfect accompaniment to the gentle background of trickling water from your water fountain.

Make sure that you search out wind chimes which are well made from waterproof materials, if they are to be left outside full time. There are many types of chimes and bells available making different sounds, from wood to metal. You are sure to find something to suit your requirements.

Look out also for very unusually styled and beautifully designed weathervanes. These are sometimes offered in a variety of themes, ensuring there is something for everyone???s tastes. The highest quality weathervanes have an old hammered copper finish. These may be easily fixed to your roof, to shops, barns, gazebos or fence posts. If you want to add a stylish accent to your garden, then a themed weathervane would do the job instantly.

If you are a keen gardener, your greenspace would also benefit from a practical as well as stylish rain gauge. You may be lucky enough to find some with a delightful flamed copper finish, bringing a warm autumnal feel to your outside areas. The better home and garden decor websites offer rain gauges featuring delightful silhouettes, filling your greenspace with charm and giving an accurate measure of the day???s rainfall.

So don???t neglect your extra room -- create your dream greenspace by searching out stylish and well made quality garden accents to give your garden decor that extra something, and to give you an extra room.

You Can Have a Water Garden In Your Yard In Just One Day!

Rather than placing a container on top of the soil where it's susceptible to temperature fluctuations,
just put a container in the ground where the ground keeps it insulated. The mini pond also looks
great at the entrance to a home, edge of a path or off your deck or when surrounded by plants in your
    garden.

    What you need:

    Shovel
    Plastic Container
    Gravel
    Flag Stones
    Marginal Plants
    Floating Plants

    Plant Options:

    Dwarf Papyrus
    Water Fringe
    Hardy Water Cannas
    Duckweed
    Water Lily
    Water Hyacinth

    Directions:

Using the container you have chosen (whiskey barrel liner or any heavy duty plastic liner or even a
livestock watering trough) as a guide, dig a hole slightly larger and deeper than the container, so
that the rim is even with the ground. Sit a level along the top of the container to make sure pond
will be level, then backfill around edges with dirt. Use dirt removed from hole to start another
garden somewhere else in your yard!

Wash gravel before putting in pond - make sure you have enough gravel to cover the bottom of your
container with three inches deep. Wash dirt off roots of your Cannas, Papyrus or Water Lily and plant
directly in gravel. Yes they will grow in gravel, I have had pond for over ten years and none of them
have dirt in them, they are full of plants growing and multiplying each year all planted in gravel. I
use a layer of pea gravel and then cover with a little bit larger stone but that is just my
    preference.

Fill pond with water, place flat stones around edge of pond to give it a more natural look and hide
the edges of your pond. You can then wait 48 hours for chlorine to naturally disperse or I buy a
chlorine remover to take chlorine out of water and add a few fish, some snails and my floating plants
and sit back and enjoy my new pond!

Also if you would like the sound of water in your garden add a pump (which I bury in the gravel) and
    fountain for even more pleasure.

To winter over if your pond is at least 2 feet deep fish can stay in throughout the winter, just
remove any floating plants and cut back other plants so debris is not allowed to decay in water and
all will come back in the spring! If a little more shallow bring fish in for winter and plants will
do fine left in the water.

One last tip - there is no need to feed your fish, they will survive on the bugs landing on the water
and by helping you keeps roots trimmed on plants by eating them just like in nature. But if you like
you can feed them a small amount each day and they will learn to recognize you when you come up to the
pond. Just remember once the temperature drops below 55 degrees their system begins to go into
hibernation and if you continue to feed them it will kill them.

To Make Your Own Garden in a Pot:

When you begin planning your pots, remember to think big, think garden:

use a variety of herbs, flowers, perennials, bulbs and groundcovers. While you are combining plants, choose plants that are compatible. Shade lovers or full sun? Texture and colors must work well together. Doing a little homework on the front end will ensure that you have great looking, everblooming containers to enjoy throughout the seasons.

-Containers are important - think size and style. What are you trying to accomplish? Are you accenting a door, adding color to an evergreen hedge in the garden, grouping for interest around the patio? Think about investing in a good, solid pot with a classic design. Practical concerns are important: durability, drainage, porosity and weight.

-Design is important - do you want bold, hot colors (reds, oranges, yellows) or are you going for a more subtle, cool look (grays, blues, light pinks, soft lavenders). Consider mixing textures: light, airy ferns with stark upright grasses, drooping prostate rosemary with tall, upright salvias.

-Arrange them artfully, and mix the textures and colors boldly. You will be generously rewarded with an array of colors, textures and scents.

-Continue to keep the pots clean and tidy and blooming by deadheading and trimming. A light fertilization when watering will keep them happy.

The Basics of Small Garden Planning

Out in rural Washington State, there is more than enough land to create as large a garden as you like. However if you're like those of us in more urban environments, the space to plant a garden is a scarcity. That is why it's important to know what to look for in that nook, niche, corner or rooftop where you might think you can coax Gaia into gracing you and your neighbors with her presence. There are a few things to keep in mind when looking to create your own secret garden and we're going to discuss each of those elements over the course of the next three articles.

The first thing in creating a garden is the choice of a piece of earth on which to begin your task. Without a choice, it will have to do just simply be the suitable plot one can find considering the conditions. When you don't have much room at all the basic choice becomes; no presence of earth's bounty, or a neatly organized small plot on which to produce the flowers and food you desire. Surely a box garden is better than nothing at all.

But we shall now assume that it is plausible to actually pick just the smallest plot for the garden. What kind of spot are you looking for? The greatest deciding factor is the sun. You don't want to maintain a north plot, unless it were absolutely forced to him because, now a northern exposure might be okay for certain strong strains of flowers or perhaps ferns, they are of really not much use as spots for a good vegetable garden or domestic flowers.

If possible, choose the right plot a southern exposure is nice if you can get it. Here the sun lies cozy all day . Once you've identified the plot and begin to plan out how it will be planted, your rows of vegetables and flowers should run north and south. If you plant your garden this way, your plants will bask in the loving warmth of the sun all morning on the eastern part, and all the afternoon on the western side. You should not allow any top heavy or heavily leaning plants in such an arrangement.

    The Basics of Rose Gardens

There are two main classes of roses: Bush roses and climbing roses. These two classifications are based entirely on tendencies of growth. Bush roses grow from 1 foot to 6 feet in height and require no support. Climbing roses produce long canes each year and must be provided with some type of support. Bush Roses Bush roses include many types grouped according to flowering habit, winter hardiness, and other traits. These types are hybrid teas, floribundas. polyanthas, hybrid perpetuals, shrubs, old-fashioned, tree or standard, and miniature.

Hybrid Teas: Hybrid teas are more widely grown and more popular than all other types of roses combined. They are the so-called monthly or everblooming roses, and are the ones grown in beds in rose gardens and by florists under glass. In fact, when the word "rose" is used, it generally suggests a hybrid tea variety. Most hybrid teas are winterhardy in the milder sections of the country, but varieties differ in cold resistance. In sections where winters are severe, practically all varieties need some protection.

Floribundas: Floribunda roses bear their flowers in clusters, and the individual blooms of many closely resemble hybrid teas. They are increasing in popularity, especially for bed plantings where large numbers of flowers are wanted. As a rule floribunda varieties are hardy: they will tolerate more neglect than any other type of rose with the possible exception of some of the shrub species. While some are fine for cutting, they will not replace hybrid teas for this purpose.

Polyanthas: Polyantha roses are distinguished from the floribundas by their smaller flowers, which are borne in large clusters. They are closely related to many of the climbing roses, having flower clusters very similar to them in form and size of individual florets. The polyanthas are hardy and may be grown in many sections where hybrid teas are difficult to grow. Their chief use is in bed plantings or in borders with other perennials. They are excellent for mass plantings.

Hybrid Perpetuals: Hybrid perpetuals are the June roses of grandmother's garden. Their flowers are large. Generally they lack the refinement of hybrid teas. As their name indicates, they are considered as ever-blooming types, although most of them do not bear continuously through the growing season as do hybrid teas. They usually develop large, vigorous bushes if given good cultural care and proper pruning. They are very hardy and stand low winter temperatures without protection.

Shrub Roses: Shrub roses are actually a miscellaneous group of wild species, hybrids, and varieties that develop an open bush type of growth that is useful in general landscape work. They are hardy in all sections of the country. While their flowers do not equal in size or form those of other types of roses, many bear very attractive seed pods in the fall. They have very fine foliage and some are quite useful for hedges or screen plantings.

Save Money On Fresh Food Without Gardening

Tips to save money on fresh foods.
Wouldn't it be ideal if we could all grow our own food. Not only would you know just what went into creating those great tasting green beans, they'd cost you less too. But not everybody has the privilege of plenty of land to grow their own food on. Gardening also takes time and energy. Your favorite fruit may not grow well in your area. I could go on and on listing reasons people have chosen to purchase their food rather than grow it themselves. The fact remains that more people buy their watermelon at the grocery store than walk into the backyard and pick one.

The grocery store is not the only place to pick up fresh produce and fruits. Many times it can be the most expensive place to purchase such items. You have to be creative and use your imagination to find the best deals. Keep your eyes open, and you'll be amazed at the possibilities to save money that you have passed by.

Do you have friends or family members that have a garden? Ask if you can help in their garden for a little of the harvest. Maybe they need a babysitter for Friday night instead. You'll never know unless you ask.

Check your local orchards for you pick days. Many have days when you can come and pick all you can for a set price. Or fill this basket for a low fee. Local farmers may do the same when they have an abundance at harvest time.

Some grocery stores sell their "seconds" for next to nothing. Our local Kroger will give you the fruit on the toss it day for free. Bruised and almost no good fruits make great jellys and jams. Don't think that just because it is a little rough around the edges, the entire fruit or vegetable is bad. And if it is free, it is certainly worthy using some how.

Your corner fruit stand my offer food for less. But be careful, many of these are higher than grocery stores on some items.

Once you get your hands on some inexpensive fresh food, make sure you don't let it go to waste. Can it, freeze it or dry it. Just make sure you use it or your time spent finding it will be wasted. When you waste time no matter how great the bargain, you've lost something you can't get back.

How to set a formal tablecheryl wheeler

Explains how to set a formal table
How to set the perfect formal table

Start with your table covering, linen is nice and is frequently used in combination with lace. The next thing to consider is your napkins which should match the tablecloth. A table runner can add a dramatic touch and bring color to your table. Now because this is formal you will want all your plates, silverware and stemware to match.

Place the charger plate first. It should be one inch from the edge. Put the dinner plate in the center of the charger plate. The soup bowl is centered upon the dinner plate. Above and to the left goes the salad plate with the bread plate to the left of it. Some place the salad plate under the soup bowl. This makes a lovely look with all your dishes arranged in size.

Now let us place the silverware. The dinner fork is placed to the left of the dinner plate with the salad fork the left of it. If you will be serving an appetizer that requires a fork then place the appetizer fork to the left of the salad fork. Place the bread knife across the bread plate. On the right side of the dinner plate place first the knife, sharp edge facing the plate and next to it on its right place the soup spoon, to the right of the soup spoon place the appetizer knife. The dessert spoon and fork should go horizontally above the dinner plate and with handles opposing each other. Basically you want the utensils that are used first on the outermost so as people eat the gradually move to the inside.

Next, place the white wine glass above the soup spoon, the red wine glass slightly up and left of it and the water glass slightly up and left of the wine glass or behind both wine glasses forming a triangle. If you will be serving coffee with dessert then after the entre plates are removed and the desert plates brought out, place a cup and saucer to the right of the dessert plate with a teaspoon placed on the saucer.

Now napkins can be folded simply on the diagonal or you can get more creative and do some fancy folding. Place these on the dinner plate, to the left of your place setting or put into the water glass.

Final touches add more elegance. Dont forget the center piece. Do make sure that your guests view of each other is not hampered by a tall flower arrangement. Place cards should be used for a larger dinner party. Traditionally, the host and hostess, sit at opposite ends of the table.
