Gardens in the City on Water

Parks in Amsterdam form an integral part of he city. It is city which has many parks generally all them cater to young kids with a padding pond and sand pit. It is one of the greenest cities in Europe and has 28 parks. In a city of cramped quarters, parks consistently cater to children. Almost every park has a playground with a sandpit and, sometimes, a paddling pool.

Quite aside from being the best children's park in Amsterdam, Vondelpark is famous for its summer program of free afternoon entertainment, which consists of children's theatre, concerts, mime artists and acrobatic displays.

Amstelpark's attractions include a miniature train, a maze, a small children's farm and pony rides. Flevopark is the wildest and least used of the city's parks, and, as such, is a nice peaceful spot for a picnic or just roaming about. The neighboring Flevoparkbad Park has two superb outdoor swimming pools and a toddlers' paddling pool in a spacious grassy recreation area.

Amsterdam's largest green areas are on the border of town. The Amsterdam's Bos is easily the pick of the bunch, with boating lakes, an open-air theatre and large playgrounds. It's also home to the magical Bosmuseum, which has maps of the park, including walking routes, and Bio Dyn Geitenkaasboerderij, a goat farm with 120 milk goats and loads of cute goat lets. Finally, Gaasperplas Park has some superb sport and playground facilities, including a paddling pool and lake for swimming.

The beautiful Rijksmuseum Garden though not very well known is definitely worth a visit. The garden houses a treasure trove of flowers, fountains and summerhouses as well as an amazing collection of sculptures. The garden was designed by the architect Cuypers, who also designed the monumental Rijksmuseum building. The 'ruins' in this garden are an attraction in their own right. At the end of the 19th century fragments of buildings from all over the Netherlands were brought together. The result is a collection of five centuries of Dutch architecture.

Vondelpark is close to the Leidseplein and the Museumplein and is the most well known as well as most visited and largest park in Amsterdam. There is always something to be done in the Vondelpark - walking, skating, listening to music or just watching the people passing by. The park was designed in an English landscape style and both Amsterdamers and tourists alike seek rest from the bustle of the city and imagine that they are in the countryside.

The Sarphatipark in Oud Zuid is the best place to escape for a moment from the hectic city life. The beautiful park is laid out in English landscape style and is surrounded by grand houses.

The canal gardens can be found in the area of the Keizersgracht and the Herengracht. The floating gardens on the roofs of houseboats are small attractions in their own right. Behind the grand Amsterdam canal houses beautiful gardens are often hidden away. These are laid out in various styles. The tranquility here is often in strong contrast with the business of the streets in front of these houses.

Many other small as well as big parks are dotted around Amsterdam. The parks of Amsterdam give a feeling of freshness in patches of greenery where the pleasant surroundings offer visitors a welcome break and the chance to review their itinerary and plan their next port of call
