A Viburnum For Bradford County Gardeners

The Blackhaw Viburnum (V. prunifolium)is a great selection for Bradford County Gardeners.
The rounded, stiffly branched habit of Blackhaw viburnum reminds you of a Hawthorn without the thorns. Other common names are Sloe, sloe-leaved viburnum, stagbush, shonny. It can be grown as a small tree because plants attain a height of 12 to 14 feet. I like it best as a multi-stem shrub. The dark green, glossy, leathery leaves turn a dark reddish to purple in the fall. Creamy white flowers are borne in flat-topped flower clusters during May. The fruit turns blue-black at maturity. The fruit, which is sweet and edible though rarly used, is nearly half an inch long, bluish black, covered with a bloom, and ripens in early autumn. It contains a small and somewhat flattened stone. The mature fruit make good preserves. The leaves are small enough that they don't pose a raking and cleaning problem. Birds frequent this shrub for feed and shelter. Plants are native and tolerate shade but flower and fruit best in full sun.

Habitat and range: The blackhaw occurs in dry woods and thickets and on rocky hillsides from Connecticut to Florida and west to Michigan and Texas, but is mostly found in the South. On our plant durability list, we rate this a 9 for ease of transplanting and site adaptability. There are also few serious pests that homeowners need to concern themselves with. We have seedling, transplants, and B&B plant to 4'. I prefer transplanting a 3-4' plant.

6 Quick & Easy Gardening Tips To Keep Your Garden Strong & Healthy

To many people caring for their plants causes a lot of anxiety. There is no need to worry as far as house plants are concerned. You only need to keep a few things in mind.

1. Watering

Most houseplants are killed by over watering. It is advisable to try the finger test to examine as to whether your soil is dry enough, looks could easily mislead you. Put in your index finger into the soil up to its first joint. Don't water if the soil is damp.

2. Feeding

K2O is the requirement of flowering plants while foliage plants have high nitrogen needs. Mixing slow release fertilizers with the compost is possible, though special fertilizer is needed by plants like cacti and orchid. It is during the most active growth period that plants should be fed.

3. Lighting

There are plants which require no sunlight like Sanseveria and Aspidistra. Placing them away from the window is possible. Semi shade is needed by spider plants. . These plants can be placed at a distance from the window which either does not or does get the light of the sun .To understand what your plant needs, check the label.

4. Temperature

Extreme fluctuations in temperature are harmful though houseplants can survive in both cool and warm temperatures. Gas heating; however is the only thing due to which houseplants can not survive. It is advisable not to put a plant near the air conditioner in summer if it is suited to warm conditions.

5. Humidity

Humid environment is needed by some plants. In order to maximize humidity as well as to keep in the moisture it is advisable to put the pot inside a larger pot and to fill in the gaps with stones or compost. Plants are also benefited by the creation of a microclimate by grouping them together. Depending on the temperature plants can be sprayed once or twice in a day if you so desire.

6. Re-potting

There are some plants that are embittered by the distribution of their roots while others require repotting for maximum growth. Re- potting is not needed by plants with small root systems. Turn your plant upside down to check if it needs repotting. Check its roots after tapping the plant to release it. Re-pot if roots are all that is visible to you. Often the roots come out and should be either cut off or the plant should be repotted.

You will in turn reap the benefits but all you should do is to take a little care of your plants. Indoor plants give much pleasure to the indoor gardener and also enhance the beauty of your indoor d?cor as well.

Requisites Of The Home Vegetable Garden.

In deciding upon the site for the home vegetable garden it is well to dispose once and for all of the old idea that the garden "patch" must be an ugly spot in the home surroundings. If thoughtfully planned, carefully planted and thoroughly cared for, it may be made a beautiful and harmonious feature of the general scheme, lending a touch of comfortable homeliness that no shrubs, borders, or beds can ever produce.

With this fact in mind we will not feel restricted to any part of the premises merely because it is out of sight behind the barn or garage. In the average moderate-sized place there will not be much choice as to land. It will be necessary to take what is to be had and then do the very best that can be done with it. But there will probably be a good deal of choice as to, first, exposure, and second, convenience. Other things being equal, select a spot near at hand, easy of access. It may seem that a difference of only a few hundred yards will mean nothing, but if one is depending largely upon spare moments for working in and for watching the garden and in the growing of many vegetables the latter is almost as important as the former this matter of convenient access will be of much greater importance than is likely to be at first recognized. Not until you have had to make a dozen time-wasting trips for forgotten seeds or tools, or gotten your feet soaking wet by going out through the dew-drenched grass, will you realize fully what this may mean.

Exposure.
---------

But the thing of first importance to consider in picking out the spot that is to yield you happiness and delicious vegetables all summer, or even for many years, is the exposure. Pick out the "earliest" spot you can find a plot sloping a little to the south or east, that seems to catch sunshine early and hold it late, and that seems to be out of the direct path of the chilling north and northeast winds. If a building, or even an old fence, protects it from this direction, your garden will be helped along wonderfully, for an early start is a great big factor toward success. If it is not already protected, a board fence, or a hedge of some low-growing shrubs or young evergreens, will add very greatly to its usefulness. The importance of having such a protection or shelter is altogether underestimated by the amateur.

The soil.
---------

The chances are that you will not find a spot of ideal garden soil ready for use anywhere upon your place. But all except the very worst of soils can be brought up to a very high degree of productiveness especially such small areas as home vegetable gardens require. Large tracts of soil that are almost pure sand, and others so heavy and mucky that for centuries they lay uncultivated, have frequently been brought, in the course of only a few years, to where they yield annually tremendous crops on a commercial basis. So do not be discouraged about your soil. Proper treatment of it is much more important, and a garden- patch of average run-down, or "never-brought-up" soil will produce much more for the energetic and careful gardener than the richest spot will grow under average methods of cultivation.

The ideal garden soil is a "rich, sandy loam." And the fact cannot be overemphasized that such soils usually are made, not found. Let us analyze that description a bit, for right here we come to the first of the four all-important factors of gardening food. The others are cultivation, moisture and temperature. "Rich" in the gardener's vocabulary means full of plant food; more than that and this is a point of vital importance it means full of plant food ready to be used at once, all prepared and spread out on the garden table, or rather in it, where growing things can at once make use of it; or what we term, in one word, "available" plant food. Practically no soils in long- inhabited communities remain naturally rich enough to produce big crops. They are made rich, or kept rich, in two ways; first, by cultivation, which helps to change the raw plant food stored in the soil into available forms; and second, by manuring or adding plant food to the soil from outside sources.

"Sandy" in the sense here used, means a soil containing enough particles of sand so that water will pass through it without leaving it pasty and sticky a few days after a rain; "light" enough, as it is called, so that a handful, under ordinary conditions, will crumble and fall apart readily after being pressed in the hand. It is not necessary that the soil be sandy in appearance, but it should be friable.

"Loam: a rich, friable soil," says Webster. That hardly covers it, but it does describe it. It is soil in which the sand and clay are in proper proportions, so that neither greatly predominate, and usually dark in color, from cultivation and enrichment. Such a soil, even to the untrained eye, just naturally looks as if it would grow things. It is remarkable how quickly the whole physical appearance of a piece of well cultivated ground will change. An instance came under my notice last fall in one of my fields, where a strip containing an acre had been two years in onions, and a little piece jutting off from the middle of this had been prepared for them just one season. The rest had not received any extra manuring or cultivation. When the field was plowed up in the fall, all three sections were as distinctly noticeable as though separated by a fence. And I know that next spring's crop of rye, before it is plowed under, will show the lines of demarcation just as plainly.

Garden Greenhouse - Heated or Cold

The home, or garden, detached greenhouse can be a simple, portable structure, or a permanent building. It simply depends upon your needs and what your expectations of the greenhouse are. Detached greenhouses are usually more expensive to heat and construct than lean-to greenhouses. There are basically two types of greenhouse for the gardener to choose from.

A portable, cold greenhouse can be erected right in the garden. Using pre-bent metal hoops or PVC pipe, the greenhouse can be built to harden off seedlings and get an early start for seeds planted right in the garden. This type of house can either be left unheated, or use of a small electric or propane heater can keep light frosts from damaging plants. This type of greenhouse can be torn down at the end of the spring season and used again the following year, or to extend the fall season for some garden crops. The cold greenhouse can also be used to over winter perennial plants and shrubs for spring planting in the flower garden.

A more permanent heated greenhouse structure can either be glass, fiberglass, plastic, or plexi-glass covered. This type of structure may need a foundation for stability. Heating and irrigation equipment can be installed inside to make operation of the greenhouse easier. Benches are usually installed to grow the plants on to bring them up to a manageable height for the owner.

This type of greenhouse, if properly insulated and glazed, may be used to grow many different types of plants including tropicals and cut flowers for the home. With proper design, a greenhouse can be built to accommodate both types of greenhouse. One portion can be kept warm, a divider can separate part of the house to provide a cold environment for plants which need the colder, unheated conditions of a cold greenhouse. Indeed, many annual flowers produced for the spring garden, like petunias and pansies, benefit from growing in cold, sometimes slightly frozen conditions.

Heated and unheated greenhouses both play their part in producing and storing plants for the home gardener. And with proper planning, one structure can satisfy both needs.

How To Make Your Garden Vibrantly Beautiful with Flowering Shrubs

Gardens are one of the most important aspects of your home in terms of aesthetic value. The first thing that people see when they approach the house is the landscape and to make a great impression of your house, your garden should be vibrant. There is no better way of making a garden stunningly beautiful than adding brilliant colors amidst the green backdrop and this can be done by planting flowering shrubs.

What Are Flowering Shrubs?

The term flowering shrubs refers to a particular group of flowering foliage whose stems are woody and whose branches form an intricate network as opposed to the single-trunk structure of trees. Shrubs typically grow to about 10 to 20 feet, and can serve as great focal points for any garden with the stunning color of their flowers that could hover over a landscape.

What Flowering Shrubs Are For

Flowering shrubs are planted in home gardens for a variety of reasons. They make great garden borders when planted side-by-side or in between other types of plants. Other people plant them mainly for their aromatic flowers especially shrubs like purple leaf sandcherry, lilac and viburnum. Some homeowners plant shrubs to establish some privacy by shielding the home against prying eyes. Flowering shrubs can also help control noise with their rich leaves that absorb sound.

What Flowering Shrubs Need to Grow

Most popular flowering shrubs are not really difficult to grow and maintain. They are hardy plants and usually just need regular watering, some fertilizing and the occasional pruning. Shrubs may also be trained to follow certain directions of growth to define a certain look in the landscape. While shrubs may indeed grow practically on their own, you could expect more progress if you take more care of them.

What Flowering Shrubs Are Available

There are many popular flowering shrubs, each having their on characteristics that make them ideal for different kinds of situations. Here are some of them:

1. Viburnum Shrub - viburnums are among the easiest of flowering shrubs to grow and maintain. While there are over 150 species belonging to the viburnum genus, it is not commonly seen in home gardens. Most viburnums are found in arboretums and botanical gardens. Viburnums are very hardy plants, a lot of them are quite resistant to diseases and pets, making them quite self-sustaining.

2. Weigela Shrub - weigela shrubs are very popular in both home and public gardens. This deciduous plant grows with an upright weeping tendency. They can add a lot of color to any garden. The leaves themselves can become purple, dark green or even bright yellow. The flowers? colors can range from milky white to bright ruby red. Weigela are also very attractive to butterflies, so if you like beautiful critters aside from beautiful blooms, this type of shrub may be right for you.

3. Forsythia Shrub - forsythias are another popular type of shrubs. This deciduous plant typically grows to about 8 to 12 feet with upright or arching branches. Forsythias are quite easy to grow as they do well with most types of soil, although they thrive best in rich loose soil, needing only the occasional pruning after flowering. This shrub produces vibrant yellow flowers during early spring.

4. Hydrangea Shrub - this is another popular kind of flowering shrub that can also come as trees or vines. Hydrangeas can produce different kinds of flower colors that can be modified by altering the pH level of the garden soil. Basic soils result into pink flowers, while acidic soils result into blue flowers. Hydrangeas that have white flowers usually do not get affected by the soil pH level, but are nevertheless attractive shrubs.

5. Lilac Shrub - lilac shrubs are among the most favorite home flowering shrubs. While the term lilac usually refers to purple with pinkish tinge, lilac flowers may come in a variety of hues including blue, red, pink, white, and of course, lilac. Lilac shrubs like sunny weather and soils that drain well. They attract butterflies and bees. This resilient plant needs only occasional pruning after flowering and some mulch as fertilizer.

Flowering shrubs are good additions to any landscape. They provide shade and color that can make any garden look vibrantly beautiful.
