12-inch Red Maple Salad Bowl and Server Set

Individually crafted in Vermont, these natural hardwood bowls inherit the natural markings of the parent tree's grain pattern, each a unique display of beauty. Every bowl starts from a solid block of maple wood and is cut by a series of saws and lathes to create the correct size and shape. Each bowl undergoes a drying process for several weeks to prevent cracking and warping. Upon completion of this process, the bowls are sanded, inspected for quality, treated with a mineral oil rub, and given a lovely glossy coating of red lacquer on the backside. There is no waste in the creation - all remaining wood elements are recycled into firewood and animal bedding. This maple bowl includes a set of matching 11-inch salad utensils with red lacquer handles, also created in Vermont from hardwood maple. Perfectly functional and ready to serve!

Great Flower Garden Design - 4 Simple Steps - Part 1

A flower garden will bring you endless enjoyment. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, but it can fill your yard with fragrance and butterflies. Your friends will admire you, and you will love to relax at home while you relish your creation.

But if you create your garden haphazardly, you'll be very disappointed. For example, if you plant the lush, tall flowers on the edges of a flower bed, they will hide the shorter ones within. If you plant a bulb in a shaded area when it needs lots of sun, it will most likely die.

So, a successful flower garden requires planning, but don't worry, that's part of the fun. The planning stage gives you the opportunity to bring out your inner artist and problem solver.

The Basic Design Elements

Your design doesn't have to be intricate. A basic layout is all you need to determine what you will plant in each flower bed. In doing so, you will make decisions about the color and height of each flower, so that you choose not just the color palette of your garden, but the vertical and horizontal dimensions as well.

First, look at each area of your yard to determine the amount of sun and wind it tends to receive. In the areas of most sun, you will choose flowers that love the sun, leaving flowers that prefer shade to the other areas of the yard.

The type of soil you have is another consideration. You will probably need to get it tested in order to know what plants will work for you or whether you need to add other elements to the soil in order to grow your preferred flowers.

You can start by making a simple drawing of your yard and where you would like to plant your flowers. Again, note the amount of sun and wind each area receives, and the size of each area. Next, you might make a list of your favorite colors and favorite flowers. If you know little about flowers, do some research in seed catalogs or online. When you find a flower that you like, search for the answers to the questions below to determine if this particular flower will work in your garden. If not, move on! You will find another that you like just as well, if not better.

Choosing Your Plants

Before you begin buying plants, you need to determine how much you can spend on your garden. Work out a budget so that you don't over-spend. Then, consider the following questions for each flower:

1. How much does it cost, and will it fit into your budget?
2. Does it grow in your zone?
3. What kind of soil does it need?
4. How much sun does it require?
5. Can it withstand wind?
6. Is it hardy, or does it require special care? If so, do you have the time to provide this special care?
7. How tall does it grow, and will you be able to accommodate its height?
8. How long does it take to achieve a flowering plant?
9. Is it an annual or a perennial, and when does it flower?

Take a look at photos of flower gardens to get ideas, and think about how many flowers you want. You may decide to frame a particular flower with greenery or separate two types of flowers with a non-flowering plant. This is what florists do when they arrange flowers in a vase or basket. They surround the blossoms with greenery almost like the matting of a picture on the wall.

Don't forget flowering trees and shrubs. These add special interest in your yard, as they give you different vertical heights and horizontal widths. Bear in mind that they tend to take longer to achieve the flowering stage, but it may well be worth the wait. A flower garden is not created in one year's time. This is a long process that you will always be tending, so you need to enjoy the process as much as the result.

Improve Your Yard And Garden With An ATV Plow

Like many parents, I?ve always had trouble getting my adolescent son to do work around the house. I?m really big on my yard and all the outdoor work that comes with it. I do a lot of gardening, a lot of shoveling, and even more trimming and loading. For years, it was nearly impossible to get my son to help with any of this, and I finally stopped asking for any assistance at all.

A couple years ago, the family up and moved to Colorado. And not just any part of Colorado ? the Rocky Mountains. We found a nice house with a great yard in a small community called Evergreen, about 25 miles west of Denver in the foothills of the Rockies. To our surprise, the house came with a little bonus: A big wooden shed on the property containing an old ATV and a bunch of accessories to go along with it.

After arriving in late November, we found ourselves settled right in time for the winter?s first big snowstorm. And boy, did it ever come down. After three days of constant blizzard conditions and over five total feet of snow, we found ourselves trapped behind 200 yards of snow-packed driveway. The thought of attempting to shovel that huge area was overwhelming, until I recalled seeing a snow plow fitting for the old ATV in the shed. Hoping this might do the trick, I tracked out to the shed to see if I could put it together.

With a couple calls to the manufacturer of the ATV (Kawasaki), and the manufacturer of the snow plow (WARN), I was set up and ready to go. Curiously, I only made it to the edge of the garage before my teenage son was running at me with wide eyes and a never-before-seen look of interest in household chores. Amazingly, the kid begged me to shovel the driveway, a task he had always faked a cold to get out of.

In just two hours, the ATV had plowed the entire 200 yards of driveway, and my son ran in as excited as if he had just spent the time on his snowboard. For the remainder of the winter season, his eyes lit up each and every time the snow fell, and we never spent more than a couple hours snowed in. During those great hours, my wife and I would simply warm up a pot of hot cocoa and watch the amazing transformation taking place from the warmth of the house.

When spring came around and it was time to get started on my tree trimming and garden duties, I found a similar interest in these outdoor chores. I would trim the branches, and my son would load them into the ATV plow and transport them to the edge of the property. He then spent a week straight digging up dirt and proportioning areas of land for my grand gardening plans. In a fraction of the time it had taken in previous years, I had a great garden, thanks mostly to the help of my son and his new favorite toy.

In the past two years, I haven?t shoveled a bit of snow in the winter. For the past two summers, I haven?t put a bit of work into my garden. Yet I still have the best looking yard and garden on the block, and my son did it all with an old ATV and utility plow. And anytime the neighbors come to ask me how I got my son to be so helpful around the yard, I simply point at that old ATV and say ?Get one of those and you?ll see for yourself.?

The Journal of a Gardener in Tuscany - June 2004R A E Mayhew

June 23rd 2004

The wild flowers are dying back already, just days after their fantastic display peaked. The grass is yellowing and in a week, maybe less, all the green lush flowers will be a distant memory.

But elsewhere, the fruit trees, and in particular the cherry trees, are flourishing. Already they are producing plenty of tasty cherries. They are ready to eat now but well wait a few more days and harvest them for cherry jam. The cherries like a few more days on the tree to make tasty jam, so they are a little over ripe. The olives are busy flowering like never before, again, most likely preparing for a good year after such a bad year last year. My Agronomo assured me earlier that on average just 2% of the flowers will become olives. As this is the first year we have started to prune them, and it takes three years to restore an abandoned tree, I suppose well have to accept what we can, which is much more than last year anyhow.

A surprise appearance of aphids in the Rose garden required some action. I say surprise as usually the friendly bugs come and lift off any aphids well before they can cause any trouble. This year the bugs are a little slow and so we will use the only form of chemical we use at La Doccia, which is warm soapy water sprayed onto the buds of the affected roses. The aphids take a disliking to warm soapy water, and soon stop their nasty sap-sucking activity. Meanwhile Im watching them carefully, and hoping to see some friendly ladybirds and hoverflies soon.

Other than this we use no other chemical pesticides at La Doccia, there has not been any form of intensive farming here and we dont plan to change that. Also, a surprising amount of the chemicals available for sale at garden centres, in the UK, are now illegal to use in agriculture. The last place to use them, in my opinion, is your own garden one uses as an outdoor room; anyhow, Ill rant no more on this subject for now.

The helicopter came as planned, when planned, and the garden was ready, as planned. Pity about all the bodies in the swimming pool, these will just have to airbrushed out. What is worse is that our already small swimming pool was made smaller by a large man of 67swimming in it at the time. Once the software scalpel work takes place, postcards will be on their way soon, coming to a letter box near you.

June 12th 2004

The first wedding, and garden perfection, seemed to go well together. With the lilies bursting out of the flowerbeds, the roses oozing colour while and fresh growth now is a good time for colour at La Doccia.

The geraniums we planted have taken root and are providing colour and succulence across all the terraces. Elsewhere the laylandii I planted to cover the water tanks are settling down well, in maybe 10 years they will grow enough to cover it up well, but then again from what I hear of Laylandii growing speed, it could be next week. Also, the box hedges planted last summer are growing fast. This is their first year alone and they are all producing thick growth. Hopefully by the autumn they will be joined up and then they wont require nearly the amount of wedding they need now.

The roses we transplanted from next to the lavenderia are in new sunnier positions and look much happier too. Many are producing white and yellow roses trailing all over the new flower beds. The lavender hedges are settling well, with a fair number of bees buzzing round, while I cleared away all the weeds around the rosemary I planted at the lawn at Francesca. It looks clear again and I am tending my rosemary cuttings, some of which look well and some which dont. I will plant them all in September when the ground wont dry up. All I need to do is simply remember to head down Pig Lane and water them every couple of days every two days for the next three months in fact.

The weather has settled down and the only chance of rain seems a long way away. Looking into the clear blue sky it is hard even to imagine rain, but the English in me always makes sure I leave the house with an umbrella.

June 5th 2004

Writing in a thunder storm after a damp week of what is already being called mad weather makes me wonder if I am in Italy after all, for the mild cloudy weather all this week has led to accusations that I brought this weather over from England. Working in an olive grove earlier this week resulted in a healthy soaking once a thunderstorm came to say hello, and sent me scurrying the 20 minute run to the house, and three hours watching another incessant rainfall

Of course, being a gardener I am delighted at the rain after having mown our Italian lawn on the shortest cut this year in the morning it was ideal timing. The trouble is, having a rainstorm and walking round the house gleefully rubbing my hands together and grinning out of the window is in direct contrast to the guests who visit La Doccia in search of the Tuscan sun. But I manage to avoid slapping my hands together at every new thunder clap. So far no one has blamed me directly for ruining their holiday, but my glee is in direct contrast to their gloom, as I suggest yet another museum in Florence to avoid the rain.

When the sun is out, which is often enough, our guests are soon out enjoying themselves and plenty are complementing the roses. Some even entered the woods, which along with the Olive Grove is covered in a blue haze of tufted vetch. These and other wildflowers and clovers are making the most of warm weather and plenty of rain.

I strimmed and cleared the lowest of the walls below la Doccia, the first is the herbaceous border and the second is directly below, and part of the lawn, the third, above the olive grove, qv, is hopelessly overgrown. Exposing this from the grasses and brambles will add some order to the view of La Doccia when viewed from a helicopter 200 feet high. The reason it has never been cleared before is that neither we nor our guests ever see La Doccia from this angle until after, the glorious occasion of the helicopters coming, from then everyone will see it on every brochure and even our website, ladocciawelcomes. Assuming the photos come out well, well also have some postcards, if you want one let me know (with an address) and Ill hasten one towards you.

The Hostas have recovered from the severe battering during an unseasonal hail storm at the beginning of May, and are again enjoying their role of greeting people at the bottom of the stone staircase. The lemon tree, exposed in the car park, is in the corner of the terrace surrounded by geraniums, and the box and rosemary hedges are thriving nearby.

One area which has seen out spring is the azalea flowerbed, along with the Rhododendrons and the Camellia. These have all past their bright peak and are now into hibernation before they flower again in September lighting up the entrance to La Doccia for early autumn. They are shaded by an apricot tree which I pruned last week. It is a good idea to remove dead twigs off fruit trees such as Apricots in early summer, they direct the trees energy away from the living part of the tree, it looks better and they also make excellent kindling for the barbeque.

Discover Container Gardening with Tomatoes

An easy, proven way to save you money whileproviding good nutrition for your family!

An easy, proven way to save you money whileproviding good nutrition for your family!

You don't think you have a green thumb? That's OK--you don't really need one!Just a little knowledge and info to get youstarted!!

Those of us who live in rural areas have a decided advantage over city and apartmentdwellers. We can nearly always find roomfor a vegetable garden even if it's a smallone!

But even if you don't have an acre or two ofland to play with, don't despair! You can stillsupplement your grocery budget with freshveggies grown in a container garden--even ifthe only space you have is on your patio!

Tomatoes are about the easiest vegetablesto grow. They come in all sizes: from bite-sizecherry tomatoes to great big beefsteaktomatoes. And tastewise, store-bought tomatoes just can't compare to vine-ripened!

The first step to starting a container garden isto locate your container. You can use almostanything. A half-barrel, the kind you see forsale at garden centers, works great. You mayhave plastic buckets already on hand and thesecan work, too.

If you use buckets, usually one plant to eachbucket is enough. And keep in mind, one plant canproduce a lot of tomatoes!

Just put a layer of rocks in the bottom of your chosen container for drainage. Then fill withquality potting soil about 2/3 thirds of the wayfull.

Tomatoes are best grown from seedlings. Mostgarden centers, discount stores, and even somegrocery stores have these in stock in the spring.

Remove the plant from the plastic pot it comes inby squeezing the bottom of the pot to loosen thesoil and gently lift it from the pot. Carefully loosen the roots a little as sometimes they tendto be a little root-bound in the small pots.

Dig a hole a little bigger than your plant ball andjust set your tomato into the hole right up to theleaves and fill all around with more potting soil.

Of course, you must water the plants to make themgrow! Your tomato plants will respond well to regularfeeding. Apply a liquid fertilizer once a week.

Once your plants are larger, you may need to stakethem; however, if you are growing the "bush" variety, they won't need to be staked.

Once your plants are bearing, you may find yourselfwith a surplus. Whole tomatoes can be frozen for uselater on in soups and casseroles. Just wash and putin sealed plastic bags and place in freezer. When you're ready to use them, let them thaw partway so the skin can come off and they're ready to go in thesoup pot!

If you prefer to freeze your tomatoes already chopped, just dip each tomato in boiling water for about 10seconds. Then the peel will pull right off. Chop thetomato, put in bags and freeze.

Here's a good vegetable soup recipe for using frozentomatoes.

Combine 1 1/2 cups frozen chopped tomatoes 1 can new potatoes, drained and chopped 1 can sliced carrots, drained 1 large can tomato sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 1 3/4 cups beef broth

Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes, to let flavors mingle.Add salt and pepper to taste.

The Basics In Getting Ready For Your Spring Rose Gardening

The Basics In Getting Ready For Your Spring Rose Gardening

Submitted By: K. Finch

It is joy that we greet the arrival of spring, after a long cold winter season. You should enjoy your cool spring morning stroll around your rose gardens to find out how well they survived the winter. As soon as the weather becomes warmer, you will see green canes spouting new buds. Each growth will bring with it the bounty of rose blossoms all season long.

On the early spring days, there are basics to attend to in order to ready your garden beds for roses. Some of the items to attend to follow and be sure to visit roseflowergarden for even more rose gardening information.

- Remove all soil or protective winter coverings that surround the plants from the cold winter season. Take care not to damage the roots. However, exposing the bushes to the arrival of springtime sunshine provides the warmth needed to grow and thrive.

- Remove all the damaged canes, while clearing away the leaves and debris that have gathered around your plants and bushes during the winter.

- Prune the dead canes and branches, as this allows more growing room to sustain the survivors.

- Add compost and other organic materials to the soil, while gently cultivating the earth. This helps to loosen the hard compaction that developed from winter frost.

- Check to make sure there is ample sun exposure for health roses.

- Remember, your roses need a good drainage area for the best results.

Once the soil is prepared, simply add any new plants or bushes you wish to include in your garden, such as plants that wintered in a container. As long as the weather is warm, you can spray your roses with a fungicide treatment, since you cannot begin to early a defense against diseases that attack your precious roses. April brings the possibility of aphids, be sure to keep an eye out for them. You can simply spray them away or apply an insecticide. Roses thrive from rose food; however, you should always water them after each feeding. May is the beginning of the watering season, unless April was full of blustery showers of rain. Always soak the roots, while taking care not to water the leaves all too often.

Deadheading your roses is a good May pastime, since this encourages abundant budding and blossoms, while the results produce a pleasing flower garden. Fish or blood meals are some of the organic materials that enhance your roses, apply it after the first rush of blossoms. Compost and manure supply adequate nutrients to feed your thriving hungry plants and bushes.

When your spring rose garden is at its peak, you should continue to inspect your garden for insects and diseases, while keeping to your watering schedule. You can enjoy the pleasure of watching your roses bloom with glowing flowers. Take this time to sit and enjoy the wonderful beauty you and nature have created. Spring rose gardening offers so many incredible rewards for you and your roses; you will no doubt understand the feeling of accomplishment and pride. Spring rose gardens add to the beauty of your property and surroundings.

Vacation of a Lifetime: Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida

If you love the exhilaration of twisting, turning, and flipping at high speeds then you will love the roller coasters at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. There are so many roller coasters to keep you busy that the park will be closing before you know it. But, even if you aren?t a fan of the rides you will still love this amusement park. There are many different shows, restaurants, gift shops, and games that will entertain you as well. If you like rides and the other activities then you will really get a good deal for the entry price!

The best time of year to visit Busch Gardens in Tampa is in early spring or late fall. The reason why is because there will be less crowds and the weather is warm and comfortable, which makes walking around all day enjoyable. If you go in the dead of summer you will be scorched by the hot Florida sun and wait for hours to get on the rides. This can turn an amazing vacation destination into a miserable day of waiting and sweating. Of course, if you visit in the summer you will still have a lot of fun, but it will be considerably more enjoyable in the spring months of March and April or the fall months of September and October.

Another really cool attraction at the Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, that is worth a visit on its own is the safari. Here you can take a tram, or even a private safari, and see zebra, giraffe, lions, and other wild animals. It is excellent and a whole lot of fun. You will feel like you are in Africa and it?s the easiest way to safari while you are still in North America !

You can come to Busch Gardens Tampa for a day or you can create a full week of fun and include nearby Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, and the like in your vacation itinerary. When you visit Tampa, Florida there are so many fun things to do in and around Busch Gardens that you really should take advantage of everything while you are here!

If you are worried about having tickets before you arrive then consider buying them online. There are websites that offer discounted tickets and even combination Busch Gardens-Sea World tickets where you can save some money. You can also buy your tickets at the gate when you arrive. Just make sure you have some cash on hand to pay for parking!

Speck Black Toughskin for Motorola Q Q-BLACK-TS

Speck Motorola Q Moto Q Ruggedized Black ToughSkin

Super Tough Case & Holder

Manufacturer: Speck Products
Model #: Q-BLACK-TS
Condition: Brand New In Retail Package
List Price: $25.20

The ToughSkin ruggedized Moto Q case and holster provides rugged protection and fashion for your phone! Its one-of-a-kind design customizes the popular rubberized skin for extreme lifestyles. Includes ToughSkin, swivel holster and screen protector.

Features:

  • Thicker rubberized corners provide extra protection
  • Includes screen protector
  • Removable swivel holster
  • Made from strong, tear resistant material
  • Great protection and functionality

Usage:

  • Insert top of phone through keypad cutout. Push it all the way in and pull the bottom corners around the bottom of the keypad. Insert screen protector, rubbery side down, under the edge of the case. Insert phone into holster face-in (phone faces 'in' towards your body when clipped on).

Questions & Answers:

  • Can I use all the features of my phone without removing the case?
Yes- there are cutouts for all of the controls, keypad, camera, mic, speaker, and plug.
  • How does the screen protector work?
The screen protector is a separate piece of clear hard plastic with a soft rubbery ring around the back. The rubbery side goes 'down' against your phone's screen. The rubbery edge keeps the hard part of the screen protector from touching your screen, and helps it 'grip' so it won't slip or slide around.
  • How does the holster work?
The holster is a seperate piece that works with the skin. You can't use the holster without the skin! The phone faces 'in' towards your body while in the holster.
  • Will it fit on my phone?
If you've got a Moto Q with regular battery- the ToughSkin will fit! We do not recommend the ToughSkin for use with the optional extended battery on the phone. The ToughSkin can physically stretch to accommodate the extended battery- but the fit will be distorted and stretched around the screen and keypad.

The Right Patio Furniture Can Bring Your Garden To Life

When buying patio furniture, you need to be sure to select a set that will enhance your deck and suit your own personal style. Your patio should be a relaxing, private space where you can entertain friends or enjoy the peace and quiet by yourself. The right choice of patio furniture can help to create the ultimate outdoor space to be enjoyed every day.

A wrought iron patio set can bring a romantic, decadent feel to your backyard. It is the purest form of iron and can be a good investment if it is powder coated to avoid rust, as it is durable enough to last for many years. Wrought iron furniture usually has a delicate ornamental style which, when combined with deep colored plants like lavender and rose bushes, can give a beautiful Victorian appeal to your garden space.

If you prefer a tropical island theme to your deck, wicker furniture represents the ultimate in Caribbean luxury. You can maintain the feeling of relaxing by the poolside on your latest vacation by choosing form a wide range of furniture that includes love seats and deep seated chairs. A chaise longe can also help you recreate the spring break cabana and allow you to lay back in comfort to work on that all-important suntan. Wicker furniture has the added advantage that you can brighten it up with bold colored, weather resistant cushions. You can change the cushions to alter the overall look of your deck and keep your style fresh, without having to regularly replace your furniture.

Perhaps a sophisticated urban style is more to your taste, in which case you might choose a contemporary aluminum patio set. Most suited to those who love to entertain by the poolside and want to turn heads at their next party. As well as being the ultimate in durability and comfort, the sleek designs of aluminum patio furniture are all you need to make your poolside look luxurious and fun. Investing in a high quality set will make you quite a trendsetter and ensure a good time is had by all at your next pool party.

For nature lovers, who want their garden to be a place of rest and contemplation, wooden patio furniture sets present the ideal solution. The color and texture of the wood you select can turn your deck into your own personal sanctuary; a place to relax in comfort and serenity. The choice between the rich golden tones of teak and the rustic ambers of cedar wood will make your space a truly personal one.

Whatever your style and preferences, you need to take time to select the right patio furniture to suit your personal needs and lifestyle. Investing in a good quality patio set that meets your needs and moods, will enable you to really enjoy relaxing in your outdoor space. You deserve a great place to kick back in complete luxury and investing in the right outdoor furniture can allow you to do that.
