Over The Garden Wall Tips: Buy Yourself A Small Greenhouse And Save Money

Looking out over my garden wall, just to see what ravages winter has left me, I saw my first casualties, a few broken panes of glass in the small glasshouse there.

Now my garden is only tiny compared to some, about 20 feet by 30 feet, and sits at the back of my terraced property deep in the heart of Nottinghamshire UK, my very own little plot of paradise, as I call it. However it still had room for a 6 foot by 6 foot aluminium greenhouse with horticultural glass. Anyone looking at taking up gardening should seriously consider finding room for one, as the advantages far out way its initial cost. Of course the glass replacements each spring can be a menace, and can also be a little costly for good quality horticultural glass, although some may always be repairable with a little patience and a roll of Ultra Violet Stabilized, transparent scotch tape from the local DIY store.
A small inexpensive greenhouse, or even the plastic sheet covered grow-houses, can be very cost effective over the long term, and open up more possibilities for today's amateur grower.

Why Have A Greenhouse Anyway?

There are several advantages to owning a greenhouse, and here are 7 of the most beneficial, at least in my opinion as an enthusiastic amateur gardener.

1/. Half hardy and Tender, pot and container grown perennial plants, small flowering shrubs, and some ornamental fruit trees, which sat outside all summer, can be grouped together for winter protection against the ravages of the harsh weather. Gentle heat can easily be provided, if the temperatures drops too low with the aid of specialised and efficient, greenhouse heaters, but generally speaking this may not be needed as your greenhouse will always hold a certain amount of residual heat, especially if you double line the inside with the bubble wrap sheeting available from any reputable garden centre or local DIY store. To over winter Geraniums and its various varieties, I find it best to lay the pots on their side, and stand upright again as soon as new growth is seen in early spring, unless heat is provided.

2/. A greenhouse is the ideal environment to grow a few winter lettuces if you choose the cos or hardier varieties. For these winter and early spring delights I use a 2 part very course sand, to one part compost mixture as a growing medium, good drainage is very important. Very little feeding or aftercare is needed, and as always never use icy cold water straight from the tap, warm up overnight in your kitchen, closet, garage or shed. I've found that the best plant-pots for winter growing are the terracotta ones, as they tend to protect the delicate root systems better. As a good alternative to the sand, vermiculite or perlite are wonderful insulators and are both inert natural volcanic substances and widely used by both amateur and professional growers, the cost of which has come down, to now be very affordable. You may wish to use old bits of polystyrene in the bottom of your pots as an economical alternative to the traditional broken crocks for drainage, and besides it uses up another throw away item and is freely available inside appliance cartons or from friends, relatives, neighbours, shops, skips and dumpsters.

3/. Growing your own spring flowering pot plants and bulbs for a colourful display can save you plenty. Primula's, viola's, African violet's, crocus's, snowdrops miniature daffodil's and narcissi, plus the beautifully scented Hyacinth's are just a few of the typical examples of what can be grown in readiness for a wonderful windowsill full of spring colour. They need very little winter attention, as they are all quite hardy, but in the greenhouse will flower so much earlier than the ones left in your garden. Who can resist the fresh aroma from Hyacinths full in bloom, as you enter a room? Always remember to group bulbs in odd numbers, as this somehow looks more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, 1 and 3 being the best for larger bulbs, 5 and 7 for medium, 9,11 and 13 for the very small ones such as crocus's, shallow bulb bowls are readily available for this purpose. Bulb and plant varieties availability will vary from country to country, but the principles are the same.

4/. Sowing and growing your own bedding plants from seed, to fill your garden with colour later on, is another great money saver, which a greenhouse can give you. Always buy your seeds from a quality seed merchant, garden centre or from a well-known seed catalogue, if in doubt ask a local gardener for advice, or even subscribe to a popular gardening magazine for your locality, who incidentally may also give you packets of seed free, as a promotion from time to time. This really is one area of gardening where, quality does matter, and if it means paying that little extra, then its well worth it, as poor quality seed means, low germination rates, which then means fewer plants for your garden, or to resell those extras to friends and neighbours. The same applies to sowing and potting composts. Poor quality and often-cheap composts can cause the dreaded damping off of your seedlings in their early stages.

5/. All vines love being grown in greenhouses, whether they are the eating varieties or for wine making. Although the plants are indeed themselves quite hardy, it's the setting of the fruit and ripening stages that can benefit from being in this type of humid environment that a greenhouse gives them.

6/. Probably the all time favourite for owning a greenhouse in a temperate climate zone has to be, the growing of tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet peppers for those delicious summer salad dishes. These three items alone make owning a greenhouse a sheer joy and of course the benefits of having fresh home grown produce for the table at a fraction of the market cost makes the choice in favour of owning one almost irresistible to most amateur gardeners today.

7/. Now last but not least is my own personal and favourite reason for owning a greenhouse. For me there is nothing better, on a balmy summers day, than to sit in my greenhouse after watering my plants and enjoying a lovely refreshing glass of iced lemon tea, and watching the birds, bees and butterflies outside in the garden going about their daily business, all this tranquillity is my little bit of heaven on earth, my very own garden paradise.

I hope you've enjoyed this article, it's off to my greenhouse for me, as there is always plenty to do no matter what time of year it is, an amateur gardener's work is never done. Do look out for any of my other articles, but most of all........

Organic gardening

Organic gardening is a very fun and relaxing thing to do. I use raised beds in my organic garden as it makes it easier to maintain. In half my boxes I used the existing dirt that I sifted the larger rocks out of. I then added some peat moss and sandy loam for good drainage. In the other half of my boxes I purchased organic garden material from a local supplier that already had the peat moss and sandy loam. I actually liked the organic garden soil I purchased better as very fewer weeds ever came from those boxes. The boxes that I used my soil and added organic materials to I also added chicken manure from my chickens that I feed certified organic feed to. This way I know I have organic manure in my organic garden. I add leaves from my trees to my organic garden every fall.

The hardest part I found was learning what to use and what not to use in my compost bin. I used no grass clippings of any kind. I only put the leaves and trimmings from my organic garden in my compost. I Also put any left over vegetables from my organic garden into my compost. There is some chicken manure from my chickens that are only fed organic feed as to not put chemicals or such into my organic garden when I add the compost to my organic garden in the fall. My organic garden does very well and the produce I receive from it tastes like a bit of heaven.

Lawn Care - Conserving Water in the Garden

I am sure you have heard it said that we don't appreciate something until it's gone! When you think about water it's probably one of those things that like me you take for granted because it is always there! However when it comes to caring for our lawns we suddenly become very aware of the importance of water when we are faced with any form of drought which leads to such things as a sprinkler ban! If you find yourself in a drought, there are some things you can do to help conserve water and make the best use of what you have available.

If you have not already mulched your plants, do it! Mulch will help limit the amount of water that evaporates from the soil. While organic mulches such as grass clippings or wood chips are preferable since they add organic matter to the soil, plastic mulches are useful in limiting evaporation from the soil. They can be laid between rows in the vegetable garden and will help limit moisture loss; however, they also will limit infiltration.

Place your water where it will do the most good. Sprinklers are very inefficient for getting water to the roots of your plants. Much of the water lands on the leaves and evaporates before reaching the ground. A slow gentle watering at the base of the plants, allowing the water to soak into the soil, will be most efficient.

Water those plants needing it most. Newly planted trees, shrubs, and flowers with limited roots systems will most likely suffer first from drought conditions. Give these plants priority if water is scarce. Well-established plants, especially those native to the area, are likely to withstand drought conditions with limited damage.

Water in the early morning before the heat of the day. This limits evaporation and supplies plants with needed moisture to make it through the hot, sunny day.

Consider using drip or trickle irrigation systems. Many inexpensive, easy to install systems are available that provide small amounts of water to the base of individual plants. These systems place the water where it is needed most, rather than applying it across the whole garden. Check with your local garden center.

Collect water from downspouts when it rains. Roofs intercept significant amounts of rain. Collecting this runoff into a barrel can help limit the use of water during dry spells.

It's essential that you have access to plenty of water when caring for your lawn and your plants. Therefore ensuring that you take advantage of any ways to conserve water is essential.

Gardening By The Yard Tips

You have always been envious of your neighbors' spruced up garden by the yard. Flowers and lush shrubs abound in their tiny nook of paradise. You ask yourself why you never get to have that kind of garden. And, you usually dismiss such wondering with lines like "I don't have a green thumb!" or "I can't afford a gardener or a professional landscaper," which are both lame alibis.

If you want your yard to look regal with a simple but well-maintained garden, you only need two things - determination and the know-how of such an endeavor. Psyche yourself to muster such will that would consequently urge you to look for sources of information on how to go about it.

For your own gardening happiness, here's a rundown of tips on how to make your gardening by the yard endeavor a very rewarding one.

1. Deadheading

One good rule of the green thumb is to keep your border free from wilted flowers and dried leaves. Deadheading or removing dead flowers' heads will promote the blooming of your plants. Some perennials such as phlox, daylily, and Lady's Mantle get their growth jumpstarted by deadheading.

2. Prune selectively

It is a must to shorten the size of your annuals through selective pruning. This will help the plants to grow more.

3. Pinch out tops.

Certain plants respond when their tops get pinched out. Such plants include Coleus (a foliage plant) and herbs.

4. Fertilize lightly.

A minimal amount of fertilizer will further boost the growth of your vegetation. If you water your yard frequently, you have to fertilize it more regularly because of nutrient depletion.

5. Weed out.

This is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden by the yard. Moreover, removing weeds also provide better absorption of the soil's nutrients. If you can't help but use herbicide, do this safely and make sure that other plants don't get affected.

6. Water them well

One good tip when it comes to watering your garden by the yard is to do it for shorter periods of time, more often. It will do well if you increase your frequency of watering a bit come summer time. But doubling the time you water your plants will do more harm than good, e.g. erosion.

7. Say no to chemicals

Chemical is just as bad to plants as it is with humans. So better avoid using it as a pesticide. Physical pest controls or other alternatives are better options.

With these simple tips, soon enough you won't have to go green with envy with your neighbor's spectacular garden by the yard.

Be Careful of These Garden Plants

In our last installment, we told you how Highland Hill Farm just doesn't sell and install "landscaping beauty," but provides food and raw materials. we told you about Edible Wild Plants. Additionally, we want to tell you what are NOT edible, what are inedible. Even if you know already, let us remind you:

Wild Plants That Are Poisonous

Remember always, anytime you want to eat something that's wild: When in doubt, leave it out. Poisonous doesn't mean deadly all the time, but who wants to get even sick?

Nightshade is recognizable by its purple and yellow flower. Don't even handle a lot and then rub your eyes or put your fingers to your mouth. Dogwood trees and flowers are poisonous, we can ONLY EAT THE BERRIES. Houndstoungue, which looks like the big dog's long tounge. Wild rose plant beyond the rose hips, IS poisonous.

MOST mushrooms. Remember they're fungus. Actually, mushrooms are the fruit of a fungus. Although only only about 1% will cause death, quite a few more can cause sickness. There are thousands of different mushrooms and other things that look like 'em, like toadstools, so don't eat ANY unless you are absolutely sure they're safe. And, don't rely on the old notion that if you cook 'em and they don't turn black, all's well. Mushrooms do have some wonderful anti-oxidants, like ergothionome

RED elderberries are poisonous. The purple ones are okay. Fertilizers and soil ammendments like man-made Ammonium Nitrate, Hydrated Lime or even natural manure can be poisonous when concentrated. Remember not to rub your eyes or touch your mouth while working with these materials.

And yes, like mom always said, wash your hands before eating.

The Painter's Garden: Design, Inspiration, Delight

The Painter's Garden: Design, Inspiration, Delight
Gardens are refuges, ideal and protected places, almost always enclosed, often artificial, occasionally wild. An artist's view of a garden, his own garden, will show it to be a special place, a locus amoenus, as well as a source for smaller pleasures--single plants to be depicted with botanical precision in all of their beauty. The spectrum of work gathered here ranges from medieval gardens of Eden, depicted by Albrecht Durer and his contemporaries, to Peter Paul Rubens's courtly, gallant games in a royal park, Van Gogh's gnarled trees in the courtyard of a sanatorium and a video installation by Fischli & Weiss. Each is more than a mere landscape. It is a view of an artist's ideal, as imagined and experienced in the world and drawn in finished work--a view of the soul. Includes work by Max Beckmann, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Max Ernst, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Lucien Freud, Caspar David Friedrich, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Klee, Edouard Manet, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Edward Munch, Emil Nolde, Peter Paul Rubens, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Antoine Watteau. All told, 400 blooming dreams, opulently illustrated.

Architecture in the Garden

Architecture in the Garden
The elements of garden architecture—paths, walls, gates, fences, terraces, sheds, lighting, furniture, waterworks, and art—together form the backbone of any well-designed garden. In this beautifully illustrated and accessible book, legendary landscape architect James van Sweden explains how to design and build a garden like a professional. He leads his readers on a tour through some of his most exquisitely designed gardens—in the country, in the city, in the suburbs, and by the shore. “When it comes to planning a comfortable and rewarding garden,” van Sweden writes in his Introduction, “the challenges that confront the owner of an estate or a weekend cottage are often substantially the same. The principles and techniques used for organizing a large site work equally well in a more modest setting.”

Each case study highlights a particular architectural element, breaking it down into practical ideas that any gardener can apply to his or her own garden or yard. The book includes dozens of detailed schematic drawings that can be used to build many of the elements described by the author, along with an extensive, illustrated glossary. Architecture in the Garden is sure to inspire you with its many practical ideas on how to domesticate your landscape and design an outdoor space that suits your taste as well as your lifestyle.

Vegetable Gardening Tips

With the costs of living rising all the time, it may be possible to save money and increase your family's health at the same time by growing vegetables in your backyard.

It's a good idea to choose your favourite vegetables to grow and plan beds for early, middle of the season and late varieties.

Most vegetables require at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, some need 8. Some quick growers like lettuce and radish can be grown between the rows of plants that take longer to mature, like beet or corn, thus making longwood gardens full use of the area available.

Throughout dry periods, vegetable gardens need extra watering. Most vegetables benefit from an inch or more of water each week, especially when they are fruiting.

During the growing season watch for insect pests. If you discover a bug problem early it will be much easier, but be careful to not use pesticides once the vegetable are close to being picked unless it becomes an absolute necessity. Organic gardening is one healthy and environment-friendly option. Once you have reaped your crop, put the vegetable waste into your compost pile so that it can be recycled for next spring.

It is important to protect your vegetable garden from wild animals looking for a tasty treat. Make sure your garden is surrounded by a fence that will keep out dogs, rabbits, and other animals. The harm done by wandering animals during one season can equal the cost of a fence. A fence also garden decorations lawn and garden decor can serve as a frame for peas, beans, tomatoes, and other crops garden art garden state that need support.

Protection is needed in order for your vegetable garden garden decorations to yield a bountiful harvest. Hard work will pay dividends if necessary precautions have been made.
